EMFACE Now FDA‑Cleared for TMJ Dysfunction
In August 2025, BTL Industries announced that its device EMFACE® has received a new indication from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. In addition to its traditional use as a facial aesthetic treatment, EMFACE can now provide non-surgical symptom relief to those suffering from jaw pain and related muscle issues.
What Is TMJ Dysfunction?
The temporomandibular joint links the mandible (jawbone) to the skull. Dysfunction in this joint, often called TMJ, can cause pain in the jaw, face, and ears and also cause headaches, muscle spasm, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth. Existing treatments include physical therapy, splints or night guards, medications, injections (e.g., Botox), or surgery in severe cases.

How EMFACE Works
EMFACE combines two main technologies: radiofrequency (RF) heating and HIFES® (High‑Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation) to stimulate facial muscles.
- Radiofrequency gently heats the tissues, which can increase blood flow, help with relaxation of muscle spasms, and promote collagen remodeling.
- Electrical stimulation causes contraction of muscles; over time, this can help “re‑educate” muscles, strengthen or tone them, and reduce involuntary spasms or tightness.
What the FDA Clearance Covers
According to the FDA, EMFACE is now cleared to address several specific aspects of TMJ dysfunction:
- Relief of symptoms associated with muscle spasm.
- Treatment of TMJ dysfunction and associated pain.
- Muscle re‑education, meaning helping muscles resume more normal function or reduce maladaptive behavior – such as chronic tension.
- Increased local blood flow in the affected area.
- Maintenance or improvement of mandibular range of motion (jaw opening, closing, side‑to‑side motion) that is restricted by TMJ dysfunction.
The FDA clearance of EMFACE for TMJ dysfunction represents a promising addition to the treatments for managing jaw pain, spasms, and restricted jaw motion.
